Nearly 20 ago, two retired New York Police Department detectives started tracking the suspicious drowning deaths of young men across the country. Victims—typically white, athletic, college students—had appeared in multiple cities and states along the I-94 corridor, which passes from Michigan to Montana. Suspiciously, near many of the victim's bodies investigators would find graffiti smiley faces. These detectives theorized that these drownings were not drownings, but homicides that could possibly have 300 cases linked to a potential serial killer or killers, and this became known as The Smiley Face Killer Theory. This theory was criticized by the FBI, but in 2022 there were 11 "accidental" drownings in Chicago's Lake Michigan and 4 in Austin's Lady Bird Lake bringing us back to this theory...are the Smiley Face Killers back?
